Experience hunting some of the rarest legal gamebirds in North America!
Besides our South Dakota wild pheasant hunting, Mike Kuchera’s South Dakota Guide Services Inc offers our clients a specialty hunt for the upland bird hunting enthusiast. In September and early October, Mike guides some of the finest Prairie Chicken and Sharptail Grouse hunting available. You will hunt in panoramic South Dakota settings reminiscent of the film Dances With Wolves. Chances are you will not only see sharptails and prairie chickens, but you will also see other wildlife such as coyote, whitetail deer, prairie dogs, pheasant and wild turkey.
This is a two-day hunt based out of a historic ranching town in northwestern Nebraska, close to the South Dakota border. Our clients fly into Rapid City and tour the Black Hills, visiting Mount Rushmore National Monument, and then drive down to Valentine, Nebraska.
As far as hunting the sharp tail grouse and prairie chicken, we hunt wide-open country in native prairie grass, some grain fields and some tree thickets. The grouse can flush as singles or coveys with usually about 6 to 10 birds per covey. The average distance for the shot would be between 35 to 40 yards. Temperatures in the morning would be from 35 to 45 degrees and in the afternoons goes from 55 to 75 degrees, which is beautiful weather for wing shooting.
We start out early in the morning and usually hunt until around 4:00 p.m. or earlier depending upon getting our limit of birds. We stop to have a great lunch and in the afternoons if it is warm will stop to have a snack. We usually will have up to twelve people in the group. Well trained and obedient hunting dogs are welcome with the hunters.
